Grandma found Jacob and Matt slurping cereal and with slurps and in between they were whispering.
"Something up?", she asked. "Besides you?"
"Good one, Grandma!", said Matt. "We were wondering if we should tell you ....."
.... "Aw better not, Matt," interrupted Jacob.
"Now dear boys, better 'fess up because what I don't know might hurt me or someone. I'll behave."
"Promise?", asked Jacob.
Grandma gave them both "the look".

Matt popped out of his chair and blurted, "We can't have Easter Bunny at school. It's now Spring Bunny."

Then he ducked under his chair.
Jacob looked at Grandma. "You have that steam coming out of your ears look, Grandma."
"I'm counting to 1,000 ... several times. I will not erupt."
Jacob used his getting very grown up voice and carefully explained,

"Well, Easter is religious and bunnies really don't play into that
and we're just supposed to think spring and stuff getting green again."

"Matt, you must come out from under your chair if you're going to dance with us,"

Grandma said between her clenched teeth.
"Uh oh!", exclaimed both boys.
"Now Jacob get behind me and put your hands on my hips and Matt you get behind Jacob

and put your hands on his hips and then watch my feet and follow me!"
The boys soon were doing the Bunny Hop with Grandma throughout the house!

"Whew! OK lets sit for awhile," puffed Grandma. "I have a plan."
"Told ya!", cried the boys together.

"You guys are going to help and we'll have Easter right here with bunnies and eggs

and all kinds of goodies for all the kids in your school classes after I call their parents and set it up. Are you for that?"
"Go, Grandma! Git 'er done!", they hollered. "We love it when something bugs you," added Matt.
"Like Bugs Bunny?", smarted Jacob.

"Oh a comedian I have for a grandson! Now get moving and start collecting every basket in the house,

and we'll need some prizes .... just little stuff like some old knick-knacks and costume jewelry
and since some of the children might have allergies, we'll not risk any peanut type stuff
but are we ever going to have tons of jelly beans! And dozens and dozens of eggs.
D'ya know they are an art form in many cultures and ..... "
"..... and they taste good, too!", said Matt.

Came the big day. Grandma and the boys had bought up all the plastic eggs in three different stores ...

they were filled with little prizes and jelly beans and in just one
there was a shiny penny and a note that said "spend me here".

The children passed eggs on spoons from one head to another and balanced eggs on spatulas
racing through the hallway and, of course, there was a big bunny shaped cake and ice cream.

One little girl seemed to stay pretty much in a corner and she kept looking at something in her hand.

Grandma took a tissue and pretended to remove cake frosting from Melissa's nose.
"Why sweetheart! Is that penny in your hand."
"Yes ma'am but I don't understand how I can spend it here."
"Come over here with me and join all the children, OK?"

Grandma gave the signal to Jacob and Matt who started to sing Happy Easter to you .... Happy Easter to you!
"Thanks for the song, guys," said Grandma. "Now did anyone find a penny in one of the plastic eggs?"
"I did!", cried Melissa, "but I don't know where to spend it!"
Jacob and Matt placed a huge box in front of Melissa. "You may buy this box and keep what's in it," said Jacob.
The other children were all shouting to do it ... do it!
Melissa handed over her penny and carefully opened the lid

and pulled out the biggest stuffed bunny anyone had every seen!
And then with Melissa holding her bunny in front of her and with all the other children

and Grandma bringing up the rear, they all did the Bunny Hop all over the house!!!!!

After Matt had gone to bed, Grandma and Jacob were having some milk and jelly beans.
"Oh that was fun, Jacob!"
"Yeah, Grandma. And you know what?"
"What?"
Jacob trying to keep a giggle inside replied, "I'll bet that school board has egg all over their face!"

Dedicated to all children and
grownups who embrace the magic
of holidays and who celebrate
with joy and reverence.
