Cream colored fur,

a cold pink nose,

he followed me

wherever I'd go.

Luminous eyes,

so large and green ~

I can see them still

in my every dream.

He was a hunter,

right from the start.

He captured lizards ~

he captured our hearts ...

The joy he brought

to us each day ~

how happy we were

that he came to stay.

Curled up at my feet

at bedtime each night,

his nose 'tween his paws

as I turned out the light.

I still feel the tickle

of whiskers on face

as he'd nudge me each morning ~

to the kitchen he'd race.

He knew what he wanted,

fill up that dish!

Meow! he would roar

and his tail he would swish.

Out through the screen door

to the warm summer grass,

to pounce and to roll

as the hours did pass.

No fancy toys

required for play;

a catnip mouse

could fill his day.

But the days turned to months,

the months into years,

and one sunny morning

our eyes filled with  tears.

So we carried him home

and we laid him to rest,

'neath the warm summer grass

that he loved best.

Gone from our presence

missed more each day,

but the love he gave

is in our hearts to stay.
